What is an Exit Ticket?
Exit tickets are formative assessments used at the end of a lesson or session to gauge student understanding and progress. They provide valuable feedback for both teachers and students, helping to inform future instruction and identify areas that may need reinforcement. Exit tickets must be published for students to answer after every session. Then, Educators can score the students' responses.
Why is this important?
Teachers of Record and Fullmind Educators will use this timely student data after each session to lesson plan/adjust instruction accordingly to meet the needs of the students. Now, for the first time ever, schools will be able to see student scores and proof of student performance with Exit Tickets.
Best Practices
- Reserve Time: Set aside some time at the end of every session to publish and have students complete the exit ticket.
-
Align with Objectives: Ensure that exit tickets are directly aligned with the session's learning objectives, standards, or SEL components.
-
Non Instructional Session: If you've administered a summative assessment and did not teach during the session, use the exit ticket to:
- Formatively assess a concept students typically struggle with.
- Establish a baseline for a concept you plan to introduce next lesson
-
Keep it Brief: Exit tickets should be quick to complete, typically taking no more than 3-5 minutes.
-
Vary Question Types: Use a mix of multiple-choice, short answer, and open-ended questions to assess different levels of understanding over time.
-
Make it Relevant: Connect exit ticket questions to real-world applications or student experiences when possible.
-
Provide Clear Instructions: Ensure students understand how to complete the exit ticket and what is expected of them.
-
Analyze Promptly: Review exit ticket responses following our Scoring Guidelines as soon as possible to inform the next session's instruction.
Give Feedback: Provide timely feedback to students based on their exit ticket responses.
- Follow Through: If students have not completed the exit ticket prior to the next scheduled session, provide time at the start of your session to review/complete.
-
Differentiate: Adjust exit tickets to accommodate different learning levels and styles when necessary.
-
Track Progress: Use exit tickets to monitor student growth over time and identify trends.
